Description: Scientists and park staff launched a data-gathering buoy from Beach 2 at Presque Isle State Park on May 20. The $16,000 unit is fitted with sensors that record water temperature, oxygen content, pH levels and turbidity - all of which are used to measure water quality. The park staff will use the data to test for E. coli, the bacteria that restricts swimming along the peninsula. The data will be posted in real time at the Web site for the Regional Science Consortium, www.regsciconsort.com.
