As part of the Erie Art Museum's exhibit Making It Better: Folk Arts in Pennsylvania Today, Losang Samten, a Tibetan Mandala writer and a former monk , created an intricate sand painting on Feb. 5, called a sand mandala. Samten travels the world to bring peace through the creation of mandalas. His work will be on display through April 11.
As part of an annual field trip, the advanced anatomy class at Saegertown high school students toured the facilities at the Dusckas-Martin Funeral Home in Millcreek Township for a mini course on death and dying. Funeral Home owner Jack Martin described the profession and took the kids on a tour on Feb. 2.
Erie's First United Methodist Church presented a "Thursday Noon Together" concert featuring music by church organist and musical director Bruce R. Gingrich, along with baritone soloist John Myers. The two dedicated a tribute to Black History Month to the memory of Reverend Charles Kennedy, Jr., who died Nov., 2009.
A three-vehicle accident at 3:52 pm Feb. 3 blocked traffic at East 18th and Parade streets. One person has been taken to a hospital for treatment. A BMW sedan with a custom paint job was in the intersection with front-end damage. A Ford Expedition was pointed east on East 18th Street, also with heavy damage. Between them was a red Chevrolet Blazer, which had rolled onto its roof. Firefighters pulled one man out of the Blazer, which was facing east.

Three adults and one cat escaped without serious injury Monday evening from a blaze that badly damaged a home at 125 E. 21st Street. Watch as Erie firefighters work at the scene of the fire. While firefighters worked inside, firefighter Mike Callaghan used a tiny mask to administer oxygen to a cat.
Members of St. John's Lutheran Church in Erie got to see the gold cross returned to their church's steeple Feb. 1. The five-foot high cross weighs about 20 pounds and was removed in Jan. 2009, restored and covered in 24-karat gold leaf. Fiske and Sons Inc., of Erie, also repaired shingles on the church's steeple, located 2216 Peach Street. According to Jesse Fiske Sr., the company has installed over 300 crosses in the Erie region.

Erie police arrested Anthony Giddens, 21, of Philadelphia, on Jan. 29 in connection with an abduction that occurred Jan. 22 near East 13th and Holland Steets in Erie. According to police, Giddens abducted a woman, told her he had a gun, and forced her to drive to an ATM to withdraw cash. The woman escaped and contacted police. Giddens was sent to Erie County Prison in lieu of $150,000 cash bond.
Cathedral Prep's football standout Shyquawn Pullium confirmed during a news conference on Jan. 28 that he's made an oral commitment to play cornerback for coach Joe Paterno and the Pennsylvania State University football team. Pullium, a 6-foot, 175 pound senior, is expected to sign his letter of intent Feb. 3, which is the first day high school students can sign to play college athletics.
